What is a company car?

A company car is a vehicle an employer provides to an employee for business and/or personal use. It's usually provided when the employee has a need for a car, to travel frequently for business at different locations. Typically, this could be a salesperson, business development manager, or employees who perform manual work at different sites - such as engineers, social workers or delivery drivers.

Who pays for what?

As a company car helps an employee conduct their role as easy as possible, whilst having a car for personal use at the same time - there are costs to both the employer and the employee.

Benefits of electric company cars

Due to the low Benefit in Kind (BiK) tax on electric vehicles (EVs), at 2% for the 2024/2025 tax year, EVs are significantly more cost-effective for use as a company car compared to a combustion engine or hybrid vehicle.

On top of these tax savings, EVs can be cheaper to run - especially if you offer EV charging at your workplace or the employee has access to charge their vehicle from home. Maintenance on an EV is also simpler than that of a comparable petrol or diesel vehicle, meaning it's often cheaper to keep your employee on the road with an EV.
